The Courtyard Careers Event

On Thursday 1st November, the Courtyard invited pupils and parents to our annual Careers Event. The event is a well organised opportunity for pupils and parents to meet with a range of representatives from local colleges and apprenticeship schemes and discuss possible routes to future studies and careers.

This year the event, organised by Elena Vidal, the Courtyard Head of 6th form, was a huge success. Representatives from 6 local colleges (Westminster Kingsway, BSix, City and Islington, CONEL, The Leighton Project and the Harington Scheme) and 10 Apprenticeship/Internship programmes (Mencap, CARE trade, Ambitious about Autism, Inspiring the Future, GLL, Haringey & Islington, ASPIRE, SCOPE, Action for Kids and Think Forward) spoke to pupils and parents on a 1:1 basis, providing advice and guidance on how to best achieve the pupils goals and aspirations.

Alongside this opportunity, Ms Vidal also arranged for three representatives from companies who support the Courtyard's work experience programme, to speak about the benefits of hiring people with Autism. This was a very moving movement during the event, as the representatives spoke about the Courtyard pupils individually, talking about how successful they were in their placements and how they would be an asset to any organisation that employed them.

Finally, it was privilege to hear from a number of guest speakers how spoke about their journeys towards achieving a successful career and the positive impacts that their Autism has provided. They included Alain English, an actor and writer, Patrick Samuel, an artist, and Oliver Yu Chan, an artist and barista.

Ms Vidal works tirelessly to provide so many opportunities for the pupils of the Courtyard. She is passionate about ensuring that our pupils receive beneficial support of real quality and ensures that every avenue is pursued. She has developed excellent relationships with so many local companies, as well as national and international organisations, to ignite the drive and ambition in our pupils and open their eyes to their lives' potential.

The Courtyard Careers Event 2018 was a huge success with many parents commenting on how well organised the event was; a great opportunity to meet with a range of colleges and apprenticeship schemes. A huge thank you to Ms Vidal and the rest of the Courtyard staff for their continued dedication to the Courtyard pupils.
